Elyos or Asmodian? What actually changes
The difference between Aion 2's two factions, what should drive your choice and what shouldn't. Spoiler, it isn't balance.
It's the first decision you make in Aion 2 and the one with the most folklore around it. Short answer: faction does not change how strong your character is. It changes where you play, who you play with, and what you look like.
What does NOT change
Let's clear the false problems first.
- The classes are the same. All nine are available to both factions. None are exclusive, none are stronger on one side.
- The stats are identical. There's no racial bonus tipping PvP. The design explicitly targets symmetry.
- Gender is free for every class on both sides.
Anyone telling you "Asmodians are stronger in PvP" is talking about the first Aion, or about vibes.
What actually changes
1. The look
It's the most concrete difference, and since you'll spend hundreds of hours looking at your character, it isn't trivial.
| Elyos | Asmodian | |
|---|---|---|
| Inspiration | Angelic, radiant | Nocturnal, feral |
| Skin and features | Clean, faintly glowing | Harsh, claws, glowing eyes |
| Wings | Feathered, white or gold | Dark, often bat-like |
| Starting environments | Perpetual daylight | Muted tones, dark skies |
2. Where you spend your first hours
Each faction has its own home continent and its own opening quest chain. Elyos and Asmodians see different zones, characters and story through the early game: it isn't a reskin, it's separate content.
That has a practical consequence: if a friend plays on the other side, you won't run into them in the early levels.
3. Who you play with, and against
The two factions are structurally separate. The Elyos–Asmodian conflict is the engine of Aion's endgame — the Abyss, sieges, territorial war. The faction you pick is your team for the life of that character.
This is the only criterion that really matters: pick the faction where the people you want to play with are. If you're joining an existing guild, they've already chosen for you.
Ascension comes early
A minor technical difference worth knowing: you become a Daeva and unlock flight very early, around level 5 for Elyos and level 6 for Asmodians, through the main campaign quest that sends you into the Ascension Subspace.
That's a big change from the first Aion, where wings arrived at level 10 after a much longer chain. Flight has a limited base duration — roughly 60 seconds — extendable with gear, titles and items.
The one-level offset between factions has no impact on progression: it's just where each story places the scene.
Deciding in thirty seconds
- Do you have friends or a guild? Go where they are. End of discussion.
- Nobody to follow? Pick the aesthetic you prefer. You'll be looking at that character for months.
- Worried about server population? At launch nobody knows the numbers. The less populated faction usually gets faster PvP queues and more competition for resources; the more populated one has better-organised guilds. Neither is objectively better.
What you shouldn't do is wait for population statistics before making a character. At launch they don't exist, and by the time they do you'll be two weeks behind.
